Understanding the Spine in Yoga: Flexion, Extension, and What Teachers Need to Know
The spine is involved in almost everything we do in yoga. Forward folds, backbends, twists, transitions, breath mechanics, even how students rest. When spinal work feels bad, it is rarely “because yoga is dangerous.” More often it is because movement and load are going to the wrong place.
This is a practical guide for teachers and serious students. No fear. No jargon. Just what matters.
Most problems in backbends come from this: the low back is doing the job of the mid back.
The spine, simplified (just enough to teach well)
You can teach the spine well with a simple model:
Cervical spine (neck): mobile, tends to overwork when shoulders and thoracic spine are stiff
Thoracic spine (mid back): designed for rotation and extension, often stiff from lifestyle
Lumbar spine (low back): strong and load-tolerant, prefers stability over extreme range under fatigue

Many students have:

a habit of rib flare and bracing
So when they “go into a backbend,” the body finds the range somewhere. Often that means hinging into the lumbar spine.

ribs pushing forward
neck compressing
breath getting held

Smarter ways to teach extension (simple, usable cues)
Choose cues that create space and control.
Try:
“Press down to lengthen, then lift.”
“Make it smaller, keep the breath smooth.”
“Bring the shape to a place you can control.”
Smarter progressions for mixed-level classes:
sphinx before cobra
low cobra with pauses before deeper versions
fewer repetitions if you are doing a lot of vinyasa volume

Forward folds and flexion (a more honest approach)
Many students have been told “never round your back.” That cue sometimes helps people avoid yanking into end range. But as a blanket rule, it often creates rigidity and fear.
A better teaching approach:
teach the hinge first
allow the spine to move naturally within control
support the fold so students do not hang on their joints
Practical options:
bend knees generously
hands to blocks
reduce depth and focus on breath quality
A simple sequencing template (prepare, express, integrate)

sharp or escalating pain
tingling, numbness, radiating symptoms
recent injury flare that has not been assessed
In class, your job is to reduce load, reduce range, slow the pace, and offer alternatives.
