A Simple Introduction to the Nervous System

The nervous system is the body’s communication network. It gathers information, processes it, and sends signals that influence how the body responds to the world around us.

Everything from breathing and heart rate to movement, attention, and emotion involves the nervous system.

Two parts of the nervous system are especially important when we talk about yoga practice.

The Sympathetic Nervous System

The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for action. It is sometimes called the “fight or flight” response.

When this system becomes active, heart rate may increase, breathing can become faster, and the body prepares to respond to challenge or stress.

This response is not a problem. It is a normal and necessary part of how the body functions.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System

The parasympathetic nervous system supports rest, digestion, and recovery. It is often described as the “rest and digest” state.

When this system is active, breathing tends to slow, the body relaxes, and processes such as digestion and repair become more active.

Why Balance Matters

Healthy nervous system function is not about staying calm all the time. It is about having the flexibility to move between states when needed.

Sometimes the body needs alertness and energy. At other times it needs rest and recovery.

Practices like yoga, meditation, and breathwork can help support this balance by increasing awareness of how the body responds to stress and relaxation.

Understanding the nervous system gives us a clearer picture of why certain practices feel energising while others feel calming. It also helps explain why breath and attention play such important roles in yoga.

At Elements Yoga Academy, understanding the nervous system is part of how we explore yoga beyond the physical postures. To learn more about our approach to yoga education and teacher training, visit elements-academy.com.au.
